While the modernization of cities has a mostly positive impact on society, development and industrialization can also increase the potential risks to both nature and human society. These risks can include natural disasters such as earthquakes, mudslides, hurricanes, and floods, in addition to social disasters like the COVID-19 epidemic. These risks also encompass environmental disasters caused by climate change and air pollution. As the rapid development of urbanization in China continues, and the trend of migration to the cities increases, the uncertainty and risk surrounding urban development is rising at unprecedented levels. To mitigate these risks, urban governance needs to improve to prepare cities to implement both preventative and control measures.

Recently, for the first time, the 14th Five-Year Plan has outlined the concept of "resilient cities", introducing the building of resilient cities into the national-level strategic priorities. Resilient Cities are cities that have the ability to absorb, recover and prepare for future shocks (economic, environmental, social, and institutional). The plan indicates that resilient urban construction will become a foundational element in the future of China's sustainable urban development.

For example, the city of Wuhan, resulting from its experiences with the COVID-19 epidemic, is well prepared in the event of unforeseen risk to implement the appropriate modifications to local governance. Similarly, the US has a number of diverse, creative, and innovative cities that have survived both natural and man-made shocks and pressures over recent decades. The resiliency of these cities highlights the strength of urban planning in the US. Indeed, the US is at the forefront in the development of global urban resilience, leading the initiative to implement measures for the future and strengthen the construction of both communities and neighborhoods.

Today, we will introduce you several speakers from leading US urban planning companies. Our speaker will showcase studies on urban renewal, planning, and resilience development in Wuhan, and discuss the importance of advocating for the meaningful collaboration on innovations and technologies to promote excellence in sustainable and resilient design.
