Christine Branstad was born, raised and lived her entire life in Iowa until the summer of 2017. At that time, Christine moved to Beijing, China with her husband – U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad. It was a smooth transition for America’s longest serving Governor and First Lady as they took on new roles during a crucial period in world affairs.
Iowans were not surprised when Christine moved nearly 6,500 miles away for her husband’s career. Her support for her family is undeniable. Leaving two of her children and their families behind in Iowa was difficult but she is grateful that her daughter and family made the move to Beijing also.
Yet, she knows how to achieve her goals in life too. At age 39 and still First Lady of Iowa, Christine attended a Community College as a non-traditional student. Following graduation, she became a medical assistant and worked full time for six and a half years.
Her strong commitment also was visible when Christine served as First Lady of Iowa for more than 22 years. She did not hesitate to promote numerous causes helping children, health, education and those with special struggles.
Christine served on the board of directors for the Partnership for a Drug-Free Iowa, the Holy Family School Foundation and the Boone County Hospital Foundation. She also volunteered for the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association and led multiple fundraising efforts to renovate and maintain the historical Iowa Governor’s Residence. She remains a dedicated PEO member.
