Event Details

Many business leaders are wondering why conditions are so challenging in China. One key reason is that most of China's current growth is coming from state-led investment and too little of it from domestic consumption. Ultimately, this imbalance needs to be addressed; household consumption, not exports, must provide the demand needed to drive future growth and economic sustainability. China has the capability, resources, and tools to undertake the reforms necessary to establish consumption as a primary growth driver, and the policy means of doing so are well-proven. But a shift in the current growth model requires some major changes. Some key strategic questions for MNCs operating in China are: when and how will this shift happen in China, what impact will that have on the current business environment, and how should companies plan and prepare?

This briefing will unpack China's consumption challenge, outline the key reforms required to address this challenge, and discuss the impact on the operating environment of China's deficient level of household consumption.

The briefing will cover:

  • Key consumption trends in China.
  • The current Chinese policy agenda and key trajectories.
  • Signposts and red flags: what guideposts should be monitored to inform business planning?
