Since mid-September 2021, many provinces across China have experienced large-scale power outages. In some cities, multiple power outages occurred in a day without warning, and some outages lasted for more than 12 hours. Such incidents have created devastating economic losses for many AmCham China members in the manufacturing sector. It has been suggested that the power curtailment measures were a response to the Chinese government's carbon reduction policy, under which provinces were prompted to control power consumption and achieve emission reduction targets.

Following an emergency manufacturing sector meeting held at the end of September, AmCham China has been advocating on behalf of our general members from various industries to encourage both central and local government agencies to maintain a stable operation environment for the broader manufacturing space. With growing importance attached to controlling energy usage from China's central and provincial governments, China's energy structure and power market are facing reform demands.

How can foreign companies operating in China develop further resilience in reaction to potential power supply challenges and associated supply chain instabilities in China and around the world?

To help members navigate the changing situation, AmCham China's Manufacturing, Sourcing, Supply Chain and Customs (MSSC) Forum is pleased to announce our upcoming Power Supply and Energy Briefing Series. This series, with the support of our esteemed MSSC Forum Co-Chairs and experts from different sectors, will present the latest development on the power supply landscape in China and globally, suggestions on how companies can be more prepared for large-scale electricity shortages, as well as on how they should start building backup solutions and a future renewable energy infrastructure.

The first episode of this series will be hosted virtually from 1:30 to 3:00pm on Friday, October 29.
