Event Details

Following from our May discussion of the 3rd Plenum’s reform agenda, please join us for a follow-up session to dig deeper into key areas of financial sector reform, including interest rate and exchange rate liberalization, capital account opening, and capital market deepening. We will attempt to assess implementation success, explore what the likely next steps are, and consider what the impact of these reforms will be on China’s economy. The event will conclude with a hip hop commentary on the magic of China’s monetary policy.

Andrew Dougherty will revive his positon as moderator. He will joined by Logan Wright from Medley Global Advisors, Chen Long from Gavekal Dragonomics and Zhiwei Zhang from Deutsche Bank.

    Long Chen is the China Economist at Gavekal Dragonomics. Before joining the firm in January 2014, he was the economic official at the Canadian Embassy. Prior to that, he worked at Shenyin Wanguo Securities and Guosen Securities in Hong Kong. Chen is a Beijinger and graduated from Peking University.

    Andrew Dougherty is the China affairs specialist at Capital Group. He has 10 years of investment industry experience, all with Capital Group. Andrew helped set up Capital’s Beijing office in 2009, and is currently a China macro analyst and research director for Capital Strategy Research in Asia. He holds a master of philosophy in modern Chinese studies from the University of Cambridge and a bachelor’s degree in economics and international affairs from George Washington University.

    Director – China of Medley Global Advisors

    Logan Wright, based out of MGA's Beijing office, came to MGA from Stone & McCarthy Research Associates in Beijing, where he was the firm's China analyst, focusing on China's influence on global fixed income and currency markets, Chinese exchange rate policy, the measurement and management of China's foreign assets, and Chinese macroeconomic statistics. He is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and has lived and worked in Beijing since 2001. He recently defended his Ph.D dissertation concerning the political factors shaping the reform of China's exchange rate regime, at George Washington University. He also holds an M.A. in security studies and a B.S. in foreign service from Georgetown University.

    Managing Director, Chief Economist and Head of Equity Strategy for China at Deutsche Bank

    Zhiwei Zhang joined Deutsche Bank in October 2014 as Chief China Economist and Head of China Equity Strategy. Before moving to investment banking, he was from 2008 to 2010 the head of China macro research at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. He was an economist at the International Monetary Fund from 2002 to 2008, working mostly in the Research Department and the Asia and Pacific Department. He started his career as an economist at the Bank of Canada in 2001. He has published widely in academic journals, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Review of Economics and Statistics, and China Economic Review. He has a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego, and a BA from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China.
