Chen Guangbiao's recent visit to New York stirred up some controversy when he tried to do philanthropy the Chinese way by giving money directly to the poor. Equally, US philanthropy can be misinterpreted in China, causing unexpected brand damage. AmCham China and BritCham are co-hosting this opportunity to learn from a Chinese millionaire philanthropist, an American advisor in philanthropy and the founder of Charitarian media how corporations and individuals can better structure their giving from Shenzhen or Seattle. We will cover five topics:
• Chinese billionaires' perception of corporate philanthropy;
• How to structure giving by US companies in China;
• Structure of giving by Chinese companies going overseas;
• The nexus between brand, government relations, media and giving in China;
• Case-studies of foreign companies that got it right in China.
