What type of impact does bilingual education have on children today? Does the study of foreign language negatively affect a student's mother language skills? Will learning in an international education system where the dominant language is English cause a student to reach only low levels of proficiency in his or her mother tongue and English language? Even if a student is able to reach high levels of competency in two languages, is it possible that they might accomplish this standard at the loss of a richness of understanding in their own culture?
As part of its Educational Salon Series: A Close Up on International Education, Keystone Academy will host two honorable guests to explore issues surrounding bilingual education. Mary Jew and Dr. Ji-Mei Chang, who have many years of experience researching K-12 bilingual education, will both share their bilingual education experiences and explain what principles they believe are necessary to ensure children receive a successful bilingual education.
