"The most interesting parts of China are its factories," James Fallows wrote in one of his dispatches for the Atlantic magazine. The post-1970s boom in Chinese manufacturing has been responsible for many of the country's historic achievements, from bringing hundreds of millions of people out of poverty to re-establishing China as a major economic power. But the next step in Chinese manufacturing raises a new set of questions for the country -- and its foreign partners. Can China cope with its environmental emergencies? Have rising wages and social changes eroded the "China advantage"? What about new political pressures from Europe, North America, and within Asia itself? Fallows has visited more than 200 factories in China in the past seven years, and in his lunchtime presentation he will discuss some of these trends -- and their implications for international business
James Fallows is a long-time correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly, for which he has reported around the world for more than 30 years. He has written ten books, including two on China: "Postcards from Tomorrow Square" and "China Airborne," which has just come out in paperback. He also writes frequently at the Atlantic's website, does regular commentary for National Public Radio, and has won a NY Emmy for the 2009 documentary series "Doing Business in China." With his wife Deborah, a linguist and author of "Dreaming in Chinese," he lived and reported from China from 2006 and 2009 and returns regularly. Before joining the Atlantic, Fallows was chief White House speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter. He has also worked as a software designer, at Microsoft.
