China No-Brainers: How Context Mismatches Cost Time and Money
Jason D. Patent, American co-director of the Hopkins–Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies will discuss the importance of understanding the Chinese context for business success.
Issues about "culture" in business are often labeled as "soft" and don't receive attention in the form of resources (time and money). In his talk, Patent will draw attention to the costs of not dedicating resources to such matters: employee turnover (especially expensive expatriates), wasted and/or counterproductive meetings, blown partnerships, and low productivity. Once costs are made visible, discussion about potential solutions can begin.
