Global China Series: Debate at the Top: Options for China's Leadership
China has reached an inflection point. Its method of collective leadership has ensured overall stability but it has also resulted in a "success trap." Over the past two years, China's strong economic performance has given rise to a more assertive posture in international relations. In the meantime, the government has reined in scope for domestic dissent. But as Beijing seeks to change its growth model, it will require greater control over vested interests in order to sustain economic growth and social stability. Global integration as a rising power would also seem to dictate compromise over foreign policy and sovereignty issues. What course will China take?
Join us for a lunchtime event with Francois Godement, senior associate at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). Godement will discuss these issues as well as his "China at the Crossroads" essay published by ECFR and a forthcoming book on the debates of the past three years in China, "What Does China Want? From Mao to Capitalism."
