Steven Lane (Artist)

Steven Lane

Artist

Steven Lane is a New York based American painter who has lived, worked and exhibited internationally in a wide spectrum of cultures, languages and political settings. Lane has experienced the reality of life in its most basic elements living in many rural and urban settings in China, Japan, Russia, Mexico and other countries. This backdrop has provided the unique visual language shown in his abstract paintings.

Lane is an abstract painter who creates works that are both thoroughly contemporary and uniquely distinguishable from those by other artists. Lane’s art focuses on paintings and
drawings with his primary materials being paint, canvas, his writings, and newspapers and magazines from the country he is in. Rendered in a variety of formats and dimensions this
exhibition reveals new methods within Lane’s creative practice, and integral to this, new forms of imagery.

Lane titles his art by date and location to distinguish one painting from another and for the title to work as a marker of time as it is reflected in each painting. In this sense the titles act as a metaphor and does not lead the painting to a literal singular meaning or interpretation.

Lane works with an improvised and direct approach to the totality of each painting in terms of its color, structure, and form, or conversely with the removal of these elements as the
visual language of the painting defines itself. His paintings are rules based in the tradition of painting where his usage of paint and disparate base materials creates exceptional and
unique paintings.
