AmCham China is pleased to host a discussion on the Chinese economy and property sector with Andrew Collier, author of "Shadow Banking and the Rise of Capitalism in China," "China Buys the World," and "China's Technology War."


Andrew's extensive and wide-ranging career spanning media to finance both in, and focusing on, China gives him insight to both the evolution of the economy and the systems that support and drive it. He is currently working on another book focused specifically on the Chinese property sector. Come hear his thoughts on the property market and its impact on the economy.


In addition to his three books on China's economy and tech sector, Andrew is a Senior Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School and an analyst with Global Source Partners.

    Former President, Bank of China International USA at Globalsources

    GlobalSource Partners’ China Country Analyst Andrew Collier is a premier authority on China’s policy and business issues. Over a career in international banking and journalism, he has established himself as a world-renowned commentator on China’s macro, politics and industry.

    Based in Hong Kong, Andrew is also the founder of Orient Capital Research, which conducts independent research on China. He was formerly President of the Bank of China International USA, the investment banking subsidiary of Bank of China. There, he helped launch BOCI’s U.S. office, while researching issues in China’s banking industry and developing relationships with senior government officials as well as public and private companies in China. He honed his sectoral expertise on China by following Chinese internet stocks for the boutique investment bank New York Global Securities, and major Asian media companies for CLSA in Hong Kong. He began his career at Bear Stearns, establishing the company’s pan-Asia media coverage.

    He is the author of the books China's Technology War: Why Beijing Took Down Its Tech Giants and Shadow Banking and the Rise of Capitalism in China and has appeared on major networks such as CNBC Asia. He was Economics Correspondent at the Beijing Bureau of the South China Morning Post and has reported for Bloomberg Business News and Chicago’s American Metal Market.

    Mr. Collier holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations and Chinese Studies from Yale University and studied Chinese at Peking University. He is a Senior Fellow at the Mansfield Foundation in Washington and was recently named a Senior Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center at the Harvard Kennedy School, conducting research on China's property market.

    Michael Hart is President of the American Chamber of Commerce in China based in Beijing. He has over twenty-five years of business experience in Asia, including nineteen years in mainland China.

    As President, Michael oversees all advocacy, programs, partnerships, and insights provided by the Chamber to support the business growth of nearly 900 foreign corporations operating in China, including most of the U.S. Fortune 500. The chamber’s advocacy includes the impressive American Business in China White Paper and Business Climate Survey each published annually as well as numerous interactions with both the US and Chinese governments on behalf of our members.

    Prior to joining AmCham China, Michael spent most of his career in commercial real estate in Taipei, Shanghai and Tianjin including almost 20 years for a NYSE listed property services firm. He started in the research division briefing real estate owners, occupiers and investors on transactions and macro trends, he then opened, built, and led a branch office for the company in one of China’s largest Tier 1.5 cities for over a decade. Following this, Michael opened a private consulting and investment firm that among other projects invested in quick service restaurants.

    In addition to this work, Michael was a long-term AmCham member and served on the Tianjin chapter’s Executive Committee for nearly 15 years including several terms as the local Chairman.

    Michael holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on finance and banking from the University of Missouri-Columbia in the U.S. He is a fluent speaker of mandarin Chinese. Michael was born and raised near Kansas City, Missouri.
