Trade negotiations between the US and China wrapped up on January 8 in Beijing to an unclear resolution. After a "highly successful" meeting between President Trump and President Xi and their most senior representatives on December 1, 2018 in Buenos Aires, President Trump agreed that from January 1, 2019, he will leave the tariffs on $200 billion worth of products at the 10% rate, and not raise it to 25% at this time.

President Trump and President Xi agreed to immediately begin negotiations on structural changes with respect to forced technology transfer, intellectual property protection, non-tariff barriers, cyber intrusions and cyber theft, services, and agriculture. Both parties agreed that they will endeavor to have this agreement completed within the next 90 days. If at the end of this period of time the parties are unable to reach an agreement, the 10% tariffs will be raised to 25%.

Join AmCham China to discuss and share information regarding:

· What the current trade conflict is really about - Market access? Industrial policy? An unfair playing field?

· Why is IP such a focus for the Trump administration?

· What can reasonably be done in 90 days? What would be a good first step?

· How can American companies in China protect their IP rights?

· What longer term issues are American companies facing in China and how can those be resolved quickly?
