    Yinuo Li

    Founder, ETU School

    Yinuo Li has been an innovator in social sector through efforts on multiple fronts. Yinuo is the Director for Bill and Melinda Gates foundation’s China Office, where she oversees a team that works with China’s public, private, and nonprofit sectors to address key domestic and global health, development, and policy issues. Yinuo joined the foundation in 2015 after a career at McKinsey & Co., where she was most recently a partner at the firm’s office in Palo Alto, California.

    Her McKinsey career began in Los Angeles, California, in 2005. From 2008 to 2013, while based in McKinsey’s
    Beijing office, Yinuo served as co‐leader of the Healthcare Practice and as leader of the Social Sector and Global Public Health Practice. Her areas of expertise included health systems and health reform, global health, pharmaceutical and diagnostic products, digital healthcare, and health financing. Her clients included leading multinational and Chinese pharmaceutical and life science companies, institutional investors, trade associations, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and academic institutions. Yinuo became a partner at McKinsey in 2011. In 2014, she moved to McKinsey’s office in Palo Alto, where she focused on the Healthcare and Social Sector Practice. She is a sought‐after speaker on topics ranging from industry perspectives to strategy, organization, talent recruitment and development, and women’s leadership.

    Yinuo is a mother of 3 young children. In her personal capacity, she and her husband co-founded the WeChat public account “nulishehui 奴隶社会” in 2014, which became one of the most followed accounts for readers who care about social and global issues, as well as career planning and work‐life balance. The account currently has 550K followers. Two books have been published based on content from this account and it has enabled ~10 other books to be published, covering a wide range of topics from science promotion, medical education, to career planning, parenting, and novels. In 2016, Yinuo co‐founded ETU School, an effort to innovate the K‐12 education by breaking down barriers in the education ecosystem. ETU’s efforts include building teacher professional development system leveraging experience from private sector, involving social communities as resources for schools through online lifelong learning community platforms, and building IT platform to enable personalized education in schools. ETU aims to cultivate “Truly Chinese Truly Global” graduates who have strong intrinsic motivations to drive positive changes in today and tomorrow’s connected world. It also aims to promote education equality through its platforms. The ETU school effort has been widely covered by leading media outlets in China, including Caixin, China Youth Daily and Xinhua News. Yinuo serves on the Academic Advisory Board for the Schwarzman Scholarship, and the final selection committee of Rhodes Scholarship in China. Yinuo was selected as World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leader in 2016, and received Caixin’s Outstanding Women Award.

    Yinuo has a B.S. in biology from Tsinghua University in Beijing and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from UCLA.

    CEO, Better Chinese

    James Lin is the CEO of Better Chinese and currently serves as the Curriculum Advisor for the US-China 1 Million Strong Initiative. James launched Better Chinese in 2005 with a mission to connect the world through learning Chinese language and culture with meaningful, engaging, and effective pedagogies and technologies.
    Prior to Better Chinese, James' first edutech venture experience, Edutron, was funded by Thompson Learning where James was the software architect with MIT and Harvard professors. Later he was a senior management consultant at Monitor Group, where he helped clients make strategic choices on marketing and corporate strategies in industries such as telecoms and financial services. There, he recognized the power of language and culture when he worked in over 20 countries. He then co-founded L Labs, an online education company that applied a patented voice analysis technology to teach English.

    At Better Chinese, James is responsible for realizing the company’s mission and bringing our product to K-college students in the US and abroad, with over 1,500 schools including Stanford, Northwestern, Los Angeles Unified School District, San Diego Unified School District, Cambridge Unified School District, etc. He directed the US curriculum adoption efforts and helped the company become recognized as the only Chinese language learning company adopted by 10 US states.     James graduated from Brown University with bachelor's’ degrees in Computer Science and Biology with focus in AI and Neuroscience. He also received his master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Brown.

    CEO, VIPKID

    Cindy Mi is the founder and CEO of VIPKID, an education technology company that connects K-8 students in China with teachers in North America for online English immersion. Founded in 2013, VIPKID has become one of China’s leading education startups, growing 40% month over month and attracting investments from Northern Light Venture Capital, Innovation Works, Matrix Partners, Sequoia Capital, YF Capital, Learn Capital and Bryant Stibel. VIPKID, which offers a progressive pedagogy based on the Common Core curriculum, now serves over 800,000 students from all of China’s provinces. The company is regularly featured in the Chinese media and has won accolades from technology giants like Tencent.

    Ms. Mi, a lifelong entrepreneur, is passionate about the power of education to transform and empower students, parents and teachers. Prior to founding VIPKID, she was a classroom teacher and a co-founder of ABC English, a tutoring company, where she led business development and campus expansion across China. She serves on the advisory boards of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business Alumni Association and Learn Lab, an education accelerator.

    Kevin hails from Seattle, USA and graduated from the University of Washington. After working at Boeing for three years in international supplier management, he acquired his Masters in Business Administration in Shanghai, China.     President, The U.S.-China Strong Foundation

    Travis Tanner is the President of the US-China Strong Foundation. Based in Beijing, Mr. Tanner works to advance the Foundation’s mission by providing executive leadership and leading its China operations. He has more than 15 years of experience working on US-China relations.

    Mr. Tanner previously served as Senior Project Director at The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and Director of NBR’s Kenneth B. and Anne H.H. Pyle Center for Northeast Asian Studies. Previously, he was Deputy Director and Assistant Director of the Chinese Studies Program at the Center for the National Interest (formerly the Nixon Center) in Washington, DC. He also worked as a Research Assistant at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

    Mr. Tanner is the author, contributing author, or co-editor of numerous publications on the strategic, economic and political dimensions of the US-China relationship, including five volumes of the Strategic Asia series. Mr. Tanner has also been featured in major media outlets in the US and China.

    Mr. Tanner received his Master’s degree in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and the Hopkins-Nanjing Center and his Bachelor’s degree in Chinese language and literature from the University of Utah. Mr. Tanner is a member of the National Committee on US-China Relations and serves as a Senior Advisor to NBR. He currently lives in Beijing with his wife and four children.
