#MeToo movement, as a movement against sexual harassment and assault, has spread virally since October 2017 and has different variations across the globe. Standards of behavior expected in a workplace of an organization often vary in different counties and regions, resulting in great challenges for international organizations and companies to develop coherent internal policies but also being adaptable to local regulations and laws. It has drawn great attention in China.

From the #metoo movement to various cases of discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment that catch news headlines, many international organizations are tightening their workplace rules to emphasize the importance of providing a safe and respectful workplace.


AmCham China HR Forum and Women Professional Committee cordially invite HR professionals, women experts, legal and compliance experts and others that are attracted to this hot topic to AmCham ChinaWorkplace Violence and Harassment (WVH) Workshop #Metoo movement on Nov 16.


In the workshop, we will outline:

  • Progress of setting up international standards of workplace violence and harassment and its challenges.
  • Comparison studies between US and China in local laws and regulations
  • The legal and ethical basis of discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in most international organizations and differences from local laws and regulations.
  • Common forms of discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment, and examples of conduct that may constitute unexpected violation.
  • Practical tips of how to deal with and investigate a compliant of discrimination, bullying or harassment.

    Johnny Choi

    Partner at DLA Piper UK LLP Beijing Representative Office

    Johnny Choi supports multinational clients on all types of employment legal matters, including employee contracts, remuneration, data privacy, layoffs, employee IP infringements and ethical violations.

    Johnny regularly advises multinational clients at senior management level on employee disputes. He has successfully defended a number of global technology companies against IP theft by staff, and advised on related data privacy issues. He also supports various clients on highly contentious removal of company executives, and large-scale redundancies.

    Recently, Johnny has advised life science companies and airlines on investigations into serious employee misconduct or corruption. He also advises financial institutions and retail companies on the design and implementation of employee compensation and incentive schemes.

    Michelle is the Senior HR Director of Pfizer China. Prior joining Pfizer in year 2010, she was working for Shell China Limited and used to take up finance, sales and HR positions with increasing management responsibilities. Michelle has been the HR lead for many country level business transformation programs, and also represented China to participate APAC/global level’s change projects. As a well rounded HR, Michelle demonstrates deep expertise in M&A, OD, HR operations and business partner areas. She graduated from South China University of Technology and obtained both B.S and B.A degree of Chemical Engineering and International Trade. She also studied in Peking University for the EMBA program for 18 months.

    Irene Zhou

    Labour Law Specialist, International Labor Organization

    Irene Zhou is presently Labour Law Specialist in ILO Country Office for China and Mongolia. Her main responsibilities include provision of advice on the effects and role of labour laws as institutions for effective labour market governance and for the pursuit of a wide range of labour market policy goals within the framework of international labour standards. Prior to joining the ILO in Sepetmber 2018, Irene Zhou worked in the Canadian federal pubic service for over twenty years where she was Deputy Director for multilateral labour affairs, Manager for dispute resolution at Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and Senior Policy Advisor for strategic policy, analysis and workplace information directorate, Employment and Social Development Canada. She was Canadian government spokesperson for a number of ILO-related issues including transition from the informal to the formal economy, fundamental principles and rights at work and decent work in global supply chains. Ms. Zhou was also a consultant for a number of employment and labour projects in China funded by various international donors.
