Tianjin has many buildings dating from the early 1900s that were built while Tianjin played host to seven European concessions, a Japanese concession and an American contingent. Citizens of these nations and a host of others lived in Tianjin when it was a bustling trading port and diplomatic outpost. AmCham China, Tianjin, in partnership with the German Chamber, invites you experience this history as part of our autumn Tianjin Walking Tour.

Our walking tour will take us through parts of four former Tianjin concessions: the Austro-Hungarian, Italian, French and Japanese concessions. We will start near the edge of the old Chinese city (near the Yanlord Apartment Complex) and then cross into the former Austro-Hungarian and Italian concessions. After touring that area, we will cross back over the river and walk through parts of the former Japanese and French concessions. Our walk will take us by the few remaining diplomatic buildings in the Austro-Hungarian section. In the former Italian area we will see former military, religious and diplomatic buildings as well as commercial and residential areas. We will then cross over the river and visit some retail areas in the former Japanese concession ending at an important business area in the former French concession. Afterwards, we'll go to Starbucks in the historic extension of Riverside 66.

Recently, Starbucks has opened its first Tianjin flagship reserve store in the building of Zhejiang Xingye Bank- one of the most iconic heritage buildings in Tianjin. The store is in a renaissance-style building constructed in 1921.The building was officially designated as a city heritage site in 1997. The highlight of its features includes a Greek style exterior façade, a glass dome, imported marble columns and marble carvings. This building, which was once the site of Zhejiang Xingye Bank as well as a commercial building for foreign trade a century ago, has carried the memory of a whole generation of Tianjin people.

We have arranged the end of this trip here so that everyone can have a chance to admire the beautiful scenery while enjoying their coffee in this century-old building. We'll also have professional staff show us how the design team of Starbucks revitalized the historical building to achieve a balance between old and new architecture since they got the renovation program in 2010.

What's more-you'll also have a chance to visit some "hidden" rooms here, which are normally closed, and have a drink in Tianjin's first Bar "Mixato" that offers more than 30 options of cocktails, wines and craft beers.

Throughout the tour, we'll learn about why Tianjin ended up being home to such an interesting mix of people and how unique Tianjin was among cities that hosted foreign concessions. The tour will be led by Michael Hart, a former Chairman of AmCham China, Tianjin's Executive Committee and a property executive who has called Tianjin home for more than ten years.

This walk will not cover the same area as was covered in the spring walking tour.
