America and Sports go hand in hand. Team sports like football, baseball, and basketball are played and watched widely by both children and adults in the US. Sports unite people, binding communities together through a shared sense of teamwork and camaraderie. At a higher level, sports have long had the power to bring nations together. One such example was the 1971 Ping-Pong diplomacy which marked a turning point in Sino-American relations. Through the mutual understanding of shared values and cultures, sports continue to be a key driver for improving people-to-people relations and increasing overall understanding between countries.

American sports companies and franchises also have a significant business interest in China. In 2015, China announced ambitious plans to develop its sports industry and make it a key part of the economy. Much of the basis for this was an attempt to recreate what exists in the US, where the sports economy account for roughly 3% of GDP. The American sports industry has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to capitalize on this opportunity as China continues to prioritize this industry as Beijing gears up for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
