Brian Ritchie is Notre Dame’s first vice president and associate provost for innovation. Leading the University’s IDEA (Innovation, De-risking, and Enterprise Acceleration) Center, he works closely with deans, alumni, faculty, and students to promote a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization.

Dr. Ritchie’s major responsibilities as head of the IDEA Center include directing the University’s commercialization enterprise, Innovation Park at Notre Dame, a commercial accelerator designed to help Notre Dame researchers and others bring their discoveries to market, and cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship education. It is a long-term project for Notre Dame, which initially focuses on Mexico, China, and Ireland.

In this dialogue, he will share his expertise and experience, and talk about:
  • Introducing the concept of IDEA Center (Innovation, De-Risking and Enterprise Acceleration)
  • Designing Inter-disciplinary education about entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Catalyzing commercialization: bringing ideas and research to the market
  • Developing partnerships between startups and large/multinational companies
  • Forging models of collaboration between China and the US

This dialogue will be moderated by Dr. Jonathan Noble, Assistant Provost for Asia at University of Notre Dame.

    Assistant Provost for Internationalization, Asia at University of Notre Dame

    Within Notre Dame International, Noble supervises the Global Engagement and Faculty Partnerships Team, which administers a range of programs and partnerships to internationalize the University while also expanding international research collaboration. As assistant provost for Asia, Noble’s responsibilities include managing the University’s academic engagement and strategic partnerships in Asia with universities, governments, corporations, and foundations.

    Noble established Notre Dame’s Beijing Global Gateway, Greater China Scholars Program, and the Notre Dame Global Centers in Hong Kong and Mumbai. Noble previously served as the provost office’s advisor for Asia initiatives between 2007 and 2011, during which time he worked to establish the University’s Liu Institute for Asia & Asian Studies and the University’s first office in Asia, now the Beijing Global Gateway. While serving as the acting executive director of the Liu Institute between 2013 and 2015, Noble established the University’s flagship Asia Leadership Forum, during which the former presidents of Indonesia and Taiwan shared their insights about global leadership with students and faculty.

    Focusing his research and teaching on contemporary Chinese culture and society, Noble is the author of over 50 articles, essays, and translations, and he was one of 20 China scholars in the United States selected in 2005 to participate in the inaugural Public Intellectuals Program sponsored by the National Committee on United States-China Relations.

    Noble is also a fellow of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, an advisor for the Keough School of Global Affairs, a member of the University’s Global Advancement team, and an associate professor of the practice in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.

    Noble holds a Ph.D. in East Asian languages and literatures from The Ohio State University and a B.A. in East Asian studies from the College of William & Mary.

    Bryan Ritchie was appointed Notre Dame’s first vice president and associate provost for innovation in 2017. Leading the University’s IDEA (Innovation, Discovery, and Enterprise Acceleration) Center, he works closely with deans, alumni, faculty, and students to promote a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization.

    Ritchie’s major responsibilities as head of the IDEA Center include directing the University’s technology transfer enterprise as well as Innovation Park at Notre Dame, a commercial accelerator designed to help Notre Dame researchers and others bring their discoveries to market. Beyond the IDEA Center, he provides oversight for Notre Dame California, through which the University is expanding its presence across the state from its facility in Silicon Valley.

    With extensive experience in both industry and the academy, Ritchie came to Notre Dame from the venture capital firm GrowthSPORT. As president and CEO, he guided its investing activities, focusing primarily on seed-stage technology companies. Ritchie has formed two information technology companies of his own during his career and also held management positions with Century Software, Dayna Communications, IBM, Novell, IOMEGA, Megahertz, and 3Com. He has consulted for Eli Lilly, Astra Zenica, Ericcson, Seagate, Verizon, Givaudan, and over 100 other companies.

    Prior to co-founding GrowthSPORT, Ritchie spent four years directing technology commercialization at the University of Utah, first as associate vice president for technology venture development and then as associate vice president for research. He oversaw more than 60 new startups, more than $700 million in investment and grants, an average of 90 licenses per year, and 90+ patents per year.

    Ritchie is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and holds an M.B.A. from Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management and a Ph.D. in political economy from Emory University. As a member of the faculty at Michigan State University, he rose from assistant to associate to full professor of political economy, served as chair of International Relations and was part of the core faculty of the Asian Studies Center. In addition, he served as director or co-director of two student entrepreneurship programs and as associate director for external strategy of the MSU BioEconomy Network, which coordinates the university’s initiatives to promote Michigan’s bioeconomy through research, policy and economic analysis, education, corporate and government collaborations, and commercialization.

    Fluent in Thai and conversant in several other Asian languages, Ritchie is the author of two books: Systemic Vulnerability and Sustainable Economic Growth: Skills and Upgrading in Southeast Asia and, with MSU’s Lindon Robison, Relationship Economics: The Social Capital Paradigm and its Application to Business, Politics, and Other Transactions as well as numerous articles.

Attending an Event
Events have limited seating, so to ensure your attendance we encourage advance online registration and payment for ALL events. We cannot guarantee entry to anyone not registered in advance. Most of our events are in English and off the record, but please check the webpage for each event to avoid disappointment.

Advance Tickets and Discounts 
Members can receive a discount by purchasing an advance ticket at least 24 hours before the day of the event. You must pay online at the time of registering for the event to be eligible for a discount. Discounts will not be available to members at the door.

Receipts (fapiao) 
You can receive your fapiao when you arrive for an event provided that you buy an advance ticket and pay online at least 1 working day before the event and you provide the correct information for your fapiao at that time. You can leave details of the type of fapiao you need on the registration and payment page.

Event attendees can request a fapiao at the door or up to two months after the event. Requests made after that time will not be accommodated. Please contact the AmCham China staff member responsible for organizing your event.

Cancellation Policy
If you cannot attend an event for which you have registered, please cancel your registration no later than one business day prior to the event. If you fail to notify AmCham China of your cancellation in a timely fashion, you will forfeit the fee you have already paid.

To cancel you can: 1) cancel directly online through the EventBank platform on which you registered or 2) contact the AmCham China staff member responsible for organizing your event.
