AmCham China

The American Chamber of Commerce in the People’s Republic of China (AmCham China) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization whose membership comprises 4,000 individuals from 900 companies operating across China. The Chamber’s nationwide mission is to help American companies succeed in China through advocacy, information, networking, and business support services. In addition to our headquarters in Beijing, AmCham China serves Tianjin, Central China, and Northeast China through our Chapters in Tianjin, Dalian, Shenyang, and Wuhan. Across the five offices, AmCham China has more than 30 working groups, and holds more than 150 events each year.

Professor Nancy Qian is the James J. O'Connor Professor of Economics at Kellogg School of Management MEDS and a Courtesy Professor at Northwestern University's Department of Economics. She co-directs the Global Poverty Research lab, and founded China Econ Lab, an independent international organization that promotes rigorous research about the Chinese Economy. She also serves as a Special-Term Professor of Economics at Fudan University's International School of Finance.


Her research explores long-term economic, cultural, and political evolution, focusing on formal institutions and cultural norms. She has investigated topics such as the Great Chinese and Soviet Famines and local democracy within autocratic regimes, with studies spanning China, the United States, former Eastern Bloc countries, and sub-Saharan Africa.


For her Bachelor's degree, Professor Qian studied economics, Japanese, mathematics, government and minored in Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT and was a Harvard Academy post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University's Weatherhead Center of Government. She was an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Economics at Yale University prior to Kellogg. Professor Qian has native fluency in Chinese (Mandarin, Shanghainese) and English, working ability of Japanese, Spanish and rudimentary Russian.
