AmCham China is pleased to host a pre-departure guidance session for students who are preparing to study in the United States. The event will take place on May 12th at Yale Center Beijing.


2023 will be the first full academic year of offline enrollment after the pandemic. To help students better prepare and transition for the upcoming new journey, we are pleased to invite Christopher Willford, Head of Education USA at the U.S. Embassy Beijing, and Philip Oh, Consular Officer at the U.S. Embassy Beijing to share the latest trends and visa policies for studying in the US.


Representatives from educational institutions, airlines and digital payment companies will share best practices and insights on travel safety, study planning, campus life, financial management, etc. There also will be a Q&A session for our experts to address any concerns and questions that you may have about US travel policies and student safety.


This event is open to all AmCham China members. Attendees are required to RSVP by May 11th to confirm their attendance.

    Carol Li Rafferty

    Director for China | Yale University,Executive Director | Yale Center Beijing

    Carol Li Rafferty has a joint appointment with Yale University’s Office of International Affairs as Director for China and with Yale Center Beijing as Executive Director, where she heads up Yale University’s only university-wide center outside of the United States. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of JD.com (NASDAQ: JD and HKEx: 9618), and previously served on the Board of Directors of JD Logistics (HKEx: 2618). She is also a co-founder of Lean In China, an organization that has grown into a network of over 100,000 women across the country. Carol previously worked for China Investment Corporation (CIC), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, as Senior Vice President, responsible for cross-border strategic and private equity investments.

    In 2016, the World Economic Forum (WEF) selected Carol as a Young Global Leader (YGL). She is also a member of the Hong Kong X-Tech Startup Platform Advisory Committee, a China Fellow of the Aspen Institute, and a recipient of Caixin Media’s Outstanding Women Award.

    Carol graduated cum laude from Yale University, with dual B.A. degrees in Economics and International Studies. She received her J.D. degree from Stanford Law School.

    Public Engagement Officer U.S. Department of State at Head of Education USA, U.S. Embassy Beijing

    Chris currently serves as a Public Engagement Officer and is responsible for EducationUSA and cultural programs. Prior to joining the Department of State, Chris spent several years in higher education. He worked in admissions for the University of Denver and was a lecturer with the University of Colorado-Denver. He spent five years in Beijing with CU-Denver’s International College Beijing. In 2017, Chris joined the Department of State as a Consular Fellow. He subsequently spent one year as a Vice-Consul in Shenyang, China, then transitioned to the career Foreign Service. He has served as a Vice-Consul in Mexico City and Beijing. He has also worked in Embassy Beijing’s Press Office covering media analysis and social media. He is proficient in Spanish and Mandarin.

    Chris grew up in Colorado and Idaho. After graduating from Idaho State University in International Studies, Chris received a Masters in International Studies at the University of Denver. His research focused on Chinese politics and religion in communist states.

    Executive Director of Beijing Global Gateway, University of Notre Dame

    Jingyu Wang serves as the executive director of the Beijing Global Gateway, University of Notre Dame.
    Wang previously taught at Princeton University as a Lecturer in New Jersey. She also worked as the Research Associate at University of Notre Dame to coordinate the US Department of Education Title VI project with the theme “Undergraduate International Studies & Foreign Language". Wang was the founding Director of Chengdu American Center for Study Abroad from 2012 to 2018 in collaboration with Chengdu Municipal Government in China.

    Wang earned her master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Beijing Normal University. She used to teach Chinese literature at Daqing No. 4 High School. Additionally, Wang was a co-author of A Kaleidoscope of China through Princeton University Press in 2009.

    Melissa Warehall

    Head of College Counselling at Daystar Academy

    Melissa Meltzer Warehall spent 30 years as a college admissions officer and high school college counselor in the US prior to becoming Head of College Counselling at Beijing’s Daystar Academy in the fall of 2020. She was a college counselor at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools for 13 years, after spending four years at the University of Chicago’s Office of College Admissions where she read and decisioned applications as an Assistant Director of Admissions and where she wrote and edited the office’s marketing materials as the Director of Publications. Prior to her 17 years at UChicago, she spent 16 years as the Director of Admissions for The Theatre School, DePaul University. She also helped Big Bridge Academy International School in Wuxi, Jiangsu, set up their first college counseling office in 2014, returning in 2019 for further training of their college counselors. She led groups of Big Bridge Academy students, parents, teachers and administrators on tours of US colleges and universities in 2015 and 2017. Melissa has been an independent college admissions consultant, a development consultant to a children's theatre company, a journalist, an editor, and a theatre administrator. Melissa earned her JD at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, and a BS from Northwestern University. She was a member of the Joseph Jefferson Theatre Awards Committee and she served on the boards of directors of three Chicago theatre companies.

    Vice President, Head of Products at Visa China

    Robert Pei is the Vice President and Head of Products and Solutions for Visa in China. He is responsible for overall product strategy, product and solution management and sales enablement in China. He is also spearheading the China innovation center and digital partnership development.

    Robert is a business technology executive with more than 20 years of experience in Silicon Valley and China. He joined Visa from Ping An group where he managed multiple business and product leadership roles in Autohome, One Connect Financial Technology and Ping An Pay. Robert was also part of McKinsey Business Technology Office Asia, focusing on China growth and technology strategy in high tech and financial services sectors.

    Robert was co-founder of technology startups both in US and China, in the capacity of Chief Executive Officer or Chief Product Officer in mobile payment and enterprise SaaS. With his extensive entrepreneurial and technology management experience, Robert has built a strong leadership in product strategy and agile organization.

    Robert graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research with a focus on Management of Technology, and University of Science and Technology of China with Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

    Project Coordinator, Global Collaborations at The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School

    Mickey Ye has joined Johns Hopkins Carey Business School’s team in Asia in August 2021. In this role, Mickey is providing project coordination and data analysis support with multiple initiatives in Asia, and exploring new opportunities for the school in the region.
    Mickey brings to this role his passion for international education and more than eight years of work experience in higher education. During his work for several universities from the U.S. and Australia, he has expanded his skill set and grown his ability to relate to people across different cultural and educational backgrounds.
    Prior to joining Carey Business School, Mickey served as the admissions officer for the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) College in Beijing, China, responsible for international student recruitment strategy and execution. His also worked as a university representative in China for The Sooner Jump Start program (SJS) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) in 2012-2017, where he was responsible for recruitment and admissions, data analysis, reporting, and tracking new student engagement.
    Mickey is excited about helping international students realize their dream of overseas higher education and assisting universities with their developments in Asia. Mickey’s interests include studying foreign languages and listening to Western music, with Mariah Carey’s being his favorite.
