    Michael Liu is the Senior Partner of Hylands Law Firm. And he co-chairs the Legal Committee of AmCham China. He is member of different international associations such as INTA and International Business Committee of Chaoyang Lawyer Association. Michael has given presentations on Chinese law at many international conferences.

    Michael earned his bachelor’s degree from Peking University and his Master's degree from China University of Political Science and Law.

    Michael Liu is a business lawyer and a true advocate for international business. He has broad practice areas: Intellectual Property, Dispute Resolution, Compliance & NGO. He teaches Chinese IP laws and enforcement at Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) in Germany. Michael has represented many international companies and NGOs. Among these clients, he has represented a world-leading insurance NGO in establishing a representative office in China, and providing legal opinions on Compliance, Labor and IPR. He has also represented a famous German kitchenware brand in China in IP protection, including but not limited to trademark application, opposition, non-use cancellation, invalidation, patent prosecution, copyright registration, IP Portfolio, China Customs Recordal, Customs training, counterfeit goods inspection and seizure, TM & Patent Litigation, as well as enforcement and destroy the counterfeits.

    Michael has been practicing since 2010. He used to work with Stoel Rives LLP, a West Coast US law firm in their Seattle Office. He has provided legal services for many international companies as well as Chinese companies.

    Susan Munro is based in our Hong Kong office and is a member of the International Arbitration Group. She has represented clients in connection with regulatory compliance, investigations, disputes and investment matters in mainland China, the Hong Kong SAR and the Asian region for more than 20 years. From 2001 to 2010, she was based in Shanghai, where she worked on disputes, investments and US SEC, DOJ and internal investigations in the pharmaceutical, medical devices, alternative energy, financial services and other industries. From 2010 to 2020 she was based in Beijing, where she headed up the office of a US law firm and represented Chinese state-owned enterprises, financial institutions, US listed companies and a large global investment fund in connection with international regulatory compliance, investigations, cross-border disputes and investments.

    Susan has represented clients in cross-border arbitrations before the ICC, the HKIAC and the SIAC involving China and Hong Kong, and has sat as an arbitrator in bilingual disputes administered under ICC rules. She has conducted bilingual investigations regarding FCPA and UKBA violations and conducts regulatory compliance risk assessments and pre-investment regulatory compliance due diligence on behalf of multinational companies, fund managers and financial institutions. She also advises international companies with regard to compliance with China’s cybersecurity regime, including cross border data privacy and data security matters.

    Susan has near-native Chinese language capabilities and has earned undergraduate degrees and diplomas in Chinese from educational institutions in the UK and Shanghai. She has been ranked in Chambers Global, Corporate Investigations/Anti-Corruption: China from 2015 to 2020, in Chambers Asia-Pacific, Corporate investigations/Anti-Corruption: China from 2012 to 2021, and in Chambers Greater China Region, Corporate investigations/Anti-Corruption: China in 2022.     In his management of IP portfolios for large major multinational companies, Scott oversees their wide range of needs, from IP registration to administrative and criminal enforcement of IP. Scott’s experience includes trademark and patent prosecution, the acquisition and maintenance of IP rights, and the licensing and transfer of IP and know-how. In addition, Scott is an experienced litigator who has resolved disputes for plaintiffs and defendants in matters involving trademarks, trade names, trade secrets, copyrights and patents in China.

    As part of his IP practice, Scott manages anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy programs for large and small companies alike. He leads companies through IP customs and cross-border registration/enforcement, and has extensive experience in helping global companies protect their brands in the online and offline space.

Scott also represents information technology firms before the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and regularly advises on internet governance and cyber security issues in China.
