CGAC Event (CN) | Offline discussion on US-China relations

Please join us for the Chinese Government Affairs Committee (CGAC) offline discussion next Friday on August 19th!

The US-China relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world. In recent years, a divergence of values and an increasingly distrustful relationship have made it harder for the two sides to find common ground. China's Belt and Road Initiative amongst other international development campaigns have been perceived as a challenge to the traditional Western-led international order. The US Biden administration's return to a value-based foreign policy, speaking out against alleged labor abuses in Xinjiang leading to a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics and passage of the Uyghur Forced Labor Protection Act, has increased bilateral animosity. US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taiwan has plunged US-China relations to a new low and thrust the relationship into dangerous waters. The two sides' increasingly antagonistic stances on issues related to national security, economics, technology, and ideology have largely crystalized, leaving little space for adjustments that could relieve simmering tensions.

AmCham China is pleased to invite Mr. Wang Chong, the distinguished professor of Zhejiang International Studies University and executive director of the Center for US Studies to share insights on the bilateral relationship between US and China. Topics include:

  • How can the two sides reconcile their differences?
  • How can two countries move forward?
  • How can foreign companies in China operate and navigate in face of these extremely tense bilateral relations?

The event will be moderated by Ms. Christine Yuan, Vice Chair of Chinese Government Affairs Committee and General Manager of Corporate Relations for Rio Tinto China.
