As 2019 draws to a close, the U.S. and North Korea remain locked in a tug-of-war over the DPRK's nuclear weapons program. Recently, the DPRK warned the U.S. that its 'hostile policy' is closing the door to dialogue.

What role might China, North Korea's closest and most influential ally, play in bridging the gap between Washington's denuclearization demands and Pyongyang's calls for sanctions relief? And what does the continued escalation of US-DPRK tensions mean for the trade war, and for U.S.-China relations more broadly?

On November 22, AmCham China will host Anna Fifield, the Beijing bureau chief for the Washington Post and one of the most knowledgeable journalists writing about North Korea, for her new book, The Great Successor: The Divinely Perfect Destiny of Brilliant Comrade Kim Jong Un, as well as a discussion on questions related to US-China-DPRK relations.

Please join us at the AmCham China Washington Room on November 22, 2019 for the discussion with Ms. Fifield.

Anna Fifield is the Beijing Bureau Chief for the Washington Post and one of the most knowledgable journalists writing about North Korea. In her new book, titled 'The Great Successor: The Divinely Perfect Destiny of Brilliant Comrade Kim Jong Un,' Fifield draws on her dozen-plus trips to the country to penetrate the layers of myth and propaganda surrounding the young leader and his nuclear arsenal. Fifield has gained rare access to Kim’s inner circle (including the aunt and uncle who posed as his parents while he was growing up in Switzerland, members of the entourage that accompanied basketballer Dennis Rodman on his visits, and the Japanese sushi chef who pointed to Kim as the most likely successor to his father) to give a detailed and insightful portrait of one of the world’s most secretive dictators. Fifield was the Post’s bureau chief for Japan and the Koreas and is a former Seoul correspondent for The Financial Times.
