A larger portion of the world's population live in urban areas now than their rural peers. In China, urban population exceeded 50% in 2014. Cities bring many benefits to their residents, including resilient infrastructures that safeguard human lives against natural disasters, an abundance of economic opportunities and access to public services. However, growing metropolises and human activities also have produced different forms of pollution and environmental effects to air, water, soil, food, concrete and spaces that eventually endanger public health.
The increasing complexity of managing urban environment requires collaboration amongst stakeholders and owners of different solutions with holistic views and through coordinated paths. Like the pieces that put together a puzzle, these solutions include, but are not limited to, technologies and know-how that continue to improve quality of urban infrastructure, monitor and reduce emission of air pollutants, sewage, solid waste from transportation and residential, commercial and industrial buildings, remediate brownfields and restore clean water systems. Moreover, to complete the puzzle, in the context of social environment, without participation of communities and urban habitants taking responsibilities to adopt behaviors that are mindful to the vulnerability of the natural environment and byproduct risk factors produced by the built environment, the benefits of the technologies and knowledge would not be seen. In addition, in an era where the power of technologies and knowledge are being transformed by digitization, the availability and use of data place a vital role in shaping approaches what and how the city puzzles are put together.
The American Chamber of Commerce in China and the United States Embassy in China are in partnership to help expand the conversation of our bilateral relations to our communities that may have different views but certainly shared responsibilities to our environment. With the backdrop of the Tianjin Haihe River front, a live case of harmonized natural, built and social environments, we bring city managers, industrial experts, and social and community representatives together for a conversation that cites examples of how different stakeholders approach to the city puzzles of making better life in each arena of and through the interactions of our natural, built and social environments on our own and together.
