What's New in the 2016 SIAC Rules? Can You Short Cut an Arbitration Proceeding? Come and explore the New SIAC Rules for Early Dismissal of Claims and Defences.

Join us for an Innovative Mock Arbitration Tribunal with representatives from the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and Morrison & Foerster on May 15, 2017.

We’re honored to invite Kevin Nash, Deputy Registrar & Centre Director at Singapore International Arbitration Centre to attend the event, he will introduce the new rules and conclude with comments on the session.

The 2016 version of the SIAC rules, for the first time, contains specific rules governing the Early Dismissal of Claims and Defences. These rules hold tremendous promises for streamlining arbitration proceedings in appropriate cases, resulting in earlier determinations and significant cost savings. The mock arbitration event will explore practical applications in this innovative new procedure, and will involve a mock scenario that will highlight the potential utility of the procedure in appropriate cases.

    Timothy Blakely is head of Morrison & Foerster’s Hong Kong Litigation Department. Mr. Blakely has a broad practice focused on complex commercial litigation and arbitration matters and government and internal investigations. Mr. Blakely has represented multinational and Chinese clients in arbitration proceedings throughout the region. He also represents clients in defending, challenging, or seeking to enforce arbitral awards in related court proceedings. He is a regular speaker and writer on topics including international arbitration, compliance, and white collar crime. Mr. Blakely was named to Global Investigation Review’s inaugural “40 Under 40” list of the world’s leading investigations lawyers under the age of 40.

    Julian has more than 25 years of specialist experience of heavyweight international construction disputes, and also international commercial arbitrations. Sums in dispute in his cases vary from small to in excess of USD 2 billion. He has been involved in disputes throughout the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Europe. Much of his work involves PRC outbound disputes.
    In addition to acting as counsel, he also regularly sits as an arbitrator in both the Middle East and Asia Pacific. He was called to the Bar in England in 1990 and joined the Construction and Engineering Department of Pinsent Masons in 1993 . He moved to Hong Kong in 1998 with the firm, eventually leaving as a Partner in 2009. He started his practice at the Hong Kong Bar in 2010.
    Julian writes and teaches regularly on arbitration.

    As Deputy Registrar & Centre Director of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), Kevin Nash assists with the administration of all cases filed with SIAC and the supervision of SIAC's multinational Secretariat. Since joining SIAC in 2012, Kevin has assisted with and overseen the administration of more than 1,000 international cases under all versions of the SIAC Rules and the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, among others, and has significant experience in SIAC cases conducted under the Expedited Procedure and applications for the appointment of an Emergency Arbitrator. He also worked closely on the revisions to the SIAC Rules 2013, the SIAC Rules 2016 and the SIAC Investment Arbitration Rules 2017.
