Make your lunch productive by joining 12-15 motivated young professionals from within the AmCham China community to share resources and best practices for success and career development. Young professionals interested in expanding their network, becoming more involved with AmCham China, and getting to know their peers in the community are encouraged to register for this informal discussion.

This month, the Young Professionals Committee welcomes the Chairs of AmCham China's Visa Committee Gus Kang and Gary Chodorow. Gus is a tax and visa expert at Deloitte and Gary helps with US and China visas, permanent residence, and citizenship matters, he represents businesses, professionals, investors, families, and other clients located worldwide. Gary and Gus will share their unique experience and offer insight and advice for young professionals working in China.

A light lunch will be provided.

    Gary Chodorow (乔德睿) is a China-based immigration lawyer. He has helped clients with U.S. and China visas, permanent residence, and citizenship matters for more than 20 years. Gary also is a founding member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s Asia-Pacific chapter, co-chair of the American Chamber of Commerce-China’s visa committee, and adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent School of Law. He writes the U.S. & China Visa Law Blog.

    Gary has represented startups and Fortune 500 companies, Nobel Prize winners, high-tech companies, investors, EB-5 regional centers, symphonies, musicians, artists, athletes, hospitals and health care professionals, governments entities, diplomats, and many others facing complex immigration matters.

    Gary often represents clients before the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in China as well as the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices here. He also has extensive experience representing clients in Immigration Court, federal courts, and before the U.S. Department of Labor. And he is knowledgeable about the security and export control issues that arise in immigration cases.

    Gary has authored a number of articles and book chapters on immigration law. His publications have been cited in testimony before the U.S. Congress and by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. He is also frequently called on to provide expert commentary on immigration issues for the media. Gary and the U.S. & China Visa Law Blog have been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Reuters, Bloomberg, CNN, USA Today, The Atlantic, National Review, Rolling Stone, Chicago Tribune, Southern California Public Radio (KPCC), The Telegraph, The Guardian, South China Morning Post, Voice of America, Vice Media, China Central Television (CCTV) News, China Radio International, BBC, and ARD (Germany).

    Gary earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California at Berkeley’s Boalt Hall in 1993, after graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University in 1989. Subsequently, he was a partner in a Chicago law firm, where he practiced immigration law for 10 years. He has practiced law in China since 2004.

    An adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Gary has also taught courses for Peking University, China University of Politics and Law, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Liaoning University, the Beijing Lawyers Association, and the Shanghai Lawyers Association.

    Gary speaks Mandarin, Spanish, and English.

    He is admitted to the State Bar of California. And he is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and currently Co-Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce-China’s Visa Committee.

    Gus is a Tax Partner in the Global Employer Services practice of Deloitte Beijing office with over 30 years of international tax, expatriate tax, immigration, visa and related HR consulting experience.
     
    Gus is the practice leader for Global Employer Services for Northern China.
     
    Gus has extensive experience with respect to international tax and related HR issues involving global mobility especially for US, China and Korea. Gus has numerous industry experiences including manufacturing, high tech, law firms and financial services. His responsibilities include management of tax compliance and consulting engagements as well as immigration, visa and other mobility related services.
     
    As a part of the GES team, Gus has extensive experience in US and Asia; Gus worked in New York City for seven years, Korea for eight years and China for eighteen years.
     
    Gus received his BA degree in History from Yale University and graduated from New York University with a Masters in Accounting. He also studied Music at Juilliard School of Music for eight years. Gus is a New York State CPA.

    Gus is the curent Chairman of the Visa Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce; the Treasurer at the American Chamber of Commerce. He lobbies on behalf of clients and members on tax, immigration and visa issues that affect the international business community in China. He previously served as Vice President and Co-Chair of Taxation Forum, ex-officio, at the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea. Gus is also Trustee and Board Member of International School of Beijing.
