With political and economic uncertainty rising, companies are increasingly looking to the data contained in reports such as the chamber’s Business Climate Survey to help with their planning. To help you understand what this year’s survey results mean for your business, join incoming AmCham China ChairmanWilliam Zarit for this year’s survey release, accompanied by United Family Healthcare CEO and Chindex co-founder Roberta Lipson, AmCham China Policy Committee Chairman Lester Ross, as well as Michael Thorneman, Managing Partner for Greater China at Bain & Company, which once again partnered with the chamber in producing the survey this year, and Mark Wheeler,President of ConocoPhillips China.

Lipson has more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry in China and has been one of the driving forces behind the Chinese expansion of United Family Healthcare, the first foreign invested and managed private healthcare group in China.

Ross is a longstanding leader of the American business and legal communities, having been vice chairman of the chamber as well as chair of its Insurance Committee, and is in frequent contact with government officials and other stakeholders. He concentrates his practice on mergers and acquisitions and regulatory matters and has experience in a broad range of industries.

Thorneman is a senior leader in Bain’s Private Equity, Industrial Goods & Services, Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions practices, and has more than 13 years of experience living and working in China.

Wheeler is the the President of ConocoPhillips China and has worked for more than 35 years as an exploration geologist, having lived and worked in the United States, Indonesia, Malaysia, Norway, and China.

Tom Mitchell, Beijing Bureau Chief for the Financial Times, will moderate the event.

This is the 19th year AmCham China has conducted this closely watched gauge of how foreign companies are faring in China, and the report analyzes the responses of 54% of our member companies. Information coming from this year’s survey includes:

    Alan Beebe

    President at AmCham China

    Alan Beebe was appointed President of the American Chamber of Commerce in China on Mar. 14, 2016.

    Alan was an Executive Director based in Beijing, leading EY China’s Cleantech and Supply Chain and Operations (SC&O) practices. His clients include major global corporations, primarily diversified industrials and high-technology companies operating in China.

    Prior to joining EY, Alan held Executive positions with the China Greentech Initiative (CGTI), IBM, and management consulting firms AT Kearney and PRTM. He has twenty years of management consulting experience in the US, China and other Asian countries helping clients develop and implement sound business, operations and technology strategies. At EY China, he helps global clients transform their business models to drive new revenue opportunities and preserve profitability in China’s changing economic climate.

    From 2010 to 2013, Alan was a Managing Director with CGTI, a collaboration platform serving over 50 international energy and environmental companies. At CGTI, he led advisory services and strategic research across all major areas of energy and cleantech. In 2014, CGTI merged with the Paulson Institute, founded by Hank Paulson.

    Alan holds a Master’s degree from Yale University in International Relations and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Computer Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the United States. He is a Board of Advisor of the Yale Club of Beijing and in that capacity promotes academic and cultural exchanges between the United States and China. Alan has lived in China since 2002 and speaks Chinese fluently.

    Chairman at AmCham China

    William Zarit is the 2017 Chairman of AmCham China and advises U.S. and Chinese companies on investment and government relations strategies, serves as a Senior Counselor at The Cohen Group.

    As Minister for Commercial Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Mr. Zarit led the U.S. Department of Commerce’s trade promotion and trade policy activities in Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenyang. Mr. Zarit holds the title of Career Minister.

    Prior to his posting to Beijing, Mr. Zarit was Deputy Assistant Secretary, International Operations, for the U.S. Commercial Service, overseeing Commercial Sections in U.S. Embassies and Consulates worldwide. Mr. Zarit also served in Washington as the U.S. Commercial Service’s Regional Director for East Asia/Pacific.

    Mr. Zarit previously served as Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Deputy Senior Commercial Officer at both the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and at the American Institute in Taiwan.

    He earned an M.B.A. with Honors from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. with Honors in Political Science from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

    CEO of United Family Healthcare

    Roberta Lipson is CEO of United Family Healthcare. She has 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry in China. Since she co-founded Chindex in 1981, the company has expanded from its business of capital medical equipment distribution to healthcare delivery. She is the creative force behind the United Family Healthcare brand, and its hospitals and clinics in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Wuxi and Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. United Family is the first foreign invested and managed private healthcare group in China. An active leader in the business community in Beijing, Ms. Lipson is a director of the U.S. China Business Council, as well as 4 successive terms on the board of the Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce – China (AmCham) and is Co-Chair of the AmCham - China Healthcare Partnership. She also chairs the Board of the United Foundation for China’s Health and is a co- founder of Kehilat Beijing. Ms. Lipson holds a BA from Brandeis University and an MBA from Columbia University.

    Tom Mitchell is the Beijing Bureau Chief for the Financial Times. He was previously the FT’s Deputy News Editor based in London, where he edited the front pages of the newspaper’s four regional editions.

    A graduate of Duke University and former Fulbright scholar, Tom began his journalism career in Hong Kong in 1996. In 2000, Tom began a three-year posting as Guangzhou Bureau Chief for the South China Morning Post, becoming the first western newspaper correspondent to be based in South China since 1949. He returned to Hong Kong in January 2003 and served another three years as the Post’s deputy business editor before joining the FT in 2006.

    While in Hong Kong, Tom has won two ‘Scoop of the Year’ awards from the Society of Publishers in Asia.

    As Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce – People's Republic of China (AmCham) and Chair of its Policy Committee and Insurance Forum, Les Ross is a longstanding leader of the American business and legal communities in China and in frequent contact with government officials and other stakeholders.

    Mr. Ross concentrates his practice on mergers and acquisitions and regulatory matters and has experience in a broad range of industries. He has represented both foreign and local companies and has particular experience advising foreign companies on competition law and regulatory compliance in China.

    Mr. Ross represents foreign companies in their strategic expansion in China through direct investments and mergers and acquisitions in industries ranging alphabetically from agriculture to water services. He also has extensive experience representing foreign banks and corporations, including Chinese entities, in their strategic expansion in the United States, particularly focusing on M&A and regulatory clearances and compliance. He has also represented clients in trade, dispute resolution and regulatory matters in China.

    Stephen Shih is a partner in Bain & Company's Beijing office. He is a senior member of Bain's global Industrial Goods & Services practice. He also leads Bain China's Organization practice.

    Stephen advises clients across a range of sectors related to industrial and commercial equipment, resources and energy, automotive, consumer and business services and technology. He has substantial experience with growth strategy, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and customer and marketing strategies.

    Stephen has applied his consulting expertise globally with Bain, having worked in Bain's Boston and Hong Kong offices. He also leads Bain's Asia-Pacific recruiting efforts.

    He is active in the Beijing community, leading Bain's China Business Climate Survey partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce in China and serving as a Senior Practitioner Adviser at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management.

    Stephen graduated from Princeton University with an AB in Economics, magna cum laude. He holds an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he graduated as a Carter Fellow.

    Michael Thorneman is the managing partner of Bain & Company's Greater China practice with offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

    He is a senior leader in the firm's Private Equity, Industrial Goods & Services, Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions practices. He is also engaged with Bain's Developing Market 100 initiative.

    Michael has nearly 25 years of management consulting experience, with more than 13 years of experience living and working in China. He advises multinational corporations as well as Chinese companies.

    He has served leading companies across a range of industries, including industrial goods and services and consumer products. He serves private equity and corporate clients in the areas of strategy, performance improvement, M&A, organization and investments. He also holds deep expertise in commercial due-diligence, portfolio company performance improvement and fund strategy.

    Before he relocated to China, Michael served clients throughout Europe in the Stockholm, London and Brussels offices. He frequently speaks at executive summits and has been quoted by major media outlets on topics relating to private equity, M&A and corporate strategy.

    Prior to joining Bain in 1995, Michael worked in business consulting and the telecommunications industry. He also served as a Systems & Telecommunication Sergeant in the Royal Swedish Navy.

    Michael holds an MBA from INSEAD, France, an MScEE from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden and an International Baccalaureate from United Nations International School, New York. He received the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation Scholarship for his studies at INSEAD.

    Wheeler began his career as an exploration geologist in Houston, Texas in 1980. Between 1980 and 1994, he worked in the U.S. in a number of technical and supervisory positions, located in Midland, Texas, New Orleans, Lafayette, Louisiana and Houston, Texas.

    Between 1989 and 1995, Wheeler headed up Conoco’s exploration program in the mid-continent region of the US, based out of Midland, Texas. In 1995, he moved to Jakarta to lead Conoco’s exploration effort in Indonesia. In 2000, he transferred to Stavanger, Norway where he held the position of Exploration Vice President for Conoco Norway. In 2002, Wheeler returned to Jakarta as Vice President of Exploration and Exploitation for ConocoPhillips Indonesia. He was responsible for the subsurface development of the company’s major Natuna Sea, East Java and South Sumatra projects, as well as all exploration activities. During this time, he was a member of ConocoPhillips' Global Exploration Leadership Team, where he had responsibility for the company’s exploration activities for the Asia Pacific region.

    In 2005, Wheeler moved to Kuala Lumpur, as President of ConocoPhillips Malaysia where he oversaw the start-up and growth of ConocoPhillips’ Malaysia business unit. In Feburary 2015, Wheeler transferred to Beijing, China where he is currently serving as President of ConocoPhillips China, overseeing the ongoing production, development and exploration work in and around our producing assets in Bohai Bay & South China Sea.

    Wheeler received a master of science, with honors, in geology from Washington State University in 1980. For undergraduate studies, he attended University of California, Berkeley and St. Lawrence University in New York.
