Today Chinese nationals count for over 50% of AmCham China's membership. They are the driving force of MNC’s growth in China. While some would argue there is a glass ceiling for Chinese employees working in MNCs, many have obviously cracked the ceiling and rose to the top. So what does it take for them to get into the C-suite? What competencies are critical and yet particularly challenging to Chinese employees as they move up? Please join this roundtable sharing.

Lin Gao is an executive coach and trainer, and has also served on AmCham China's Board of Governors for the past four years. She recently published a book《职得 – 成为自己故事里的英雄》(To become the hero of your own story). In her book, Lin talked about the importance of critical thinking, speaking up, networking and personal branding, the key competences that are often been overlooked. She also shared her own struggle of getting out of the comfort zone to pursue her Doctor degree while leading a global team and raising a family. A believer of giving back to the community, Lin will donate 100% proceed of the book sale to Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC), an AmCham member NGO.

    Lin is partner at Intellect Associates, and has served on AmCham China's Board of Governors for the past four years, frequently meeting with senior officials from both Chinese and U.S. government to advance American businesses’ interests in China. Lin has over 20 years’ experience with Fortune 500 companies both in China and the U.S. across the areas of government affairs, IT, supply chain and marketing. Prior to setting up her own consulting, coaching and training business, Lin held the position of senior director of Global Government Affairs at Motorola Solutions China, and was responsible for managing relationship with various government bodies and trade associations for business advocacy. She was also responsible for corporate governance as well as CSR programs in Asia Pacific and Middle East region. Prior to this role, Lin had held multiple senior positions in Motorola including CIO for Asia Pacific.

    Mark Duval is the President of Terex China where he is responsible for managing China Operations, P&L and Joint Ventures for the Fortune 500 Company. Terex China includes a range of Terex businesses including Genie Ariel Work Platforms, Terex Material Handling Solutions, Terex Port Equipment, and Terex Cranes and Utilities.

    Mr. Duval was appointed President of the American Chamber of Commerce in the People's Republic of China in May, 2013 and completed his appointment in January, 2016.

    As President, Mr. Duval oversaw the management of chamber operations in Beijing, Tianjin, Dalian, Wuhan, and Shenyang, served as the link between the Board of Governors and staff, led advocacy with United States and Chinese government officials, acted as media spokesman for the American business community in China, and drove engagement and support for over 1000 companies and the 3,800 members of the Chamber.

    An American citizen, Mark grew up in Zimbabwe and South Africa before moving to the United States in 1990. He has been based in China since 1996, where for over 16 years he led in a variety of leadership roles Motorola China corporate strategy, operations and business development, public policy and government relations, communications and public affairs, crisis management, and go‐to‐market operations.

    Mark has a BSc. from the University of KwaZulu‐Natal and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin‐Milwaukee.

    Vice President, HR, Greater China at IBM

    Horst was appointed Vice President HR Greater China Group of IBM in October 2013.

    In June 1999 Horst joined IBM’s HR Service Centre in Portsmouth, England as HR Specialist for Workforce Management. During these more than 10 years in IBM Horst has enjoyed an international career working in six different countries (England, France, Spain, USA, Czech Republic and twice in China), gaining experience at various levels of the organization (Service Center, Geo, IOT, GMT and Global) supporting the business in both major and emerging markets. Horst has held various HR generalist positions as well as in the Talent and Business & Technical Leadership arena.

    During his time in IBM, Horst has worked on several important projects such as the centralization of recruitment activities, the divestiture of the PC business, the re-organization in Europe and CEEMEA, the set up of two separate Integrated Operating teams (IOT’s) as well as the pension projects for different countries around the world. Horst worked as Executive Assistant to Randy MacDonald, Senior Vice President, Human Resources IBM Corporation during the world economic crisis. Prior to his current assignment he was the Director of HR for Central & Eastern Europe supporting 17 countries including Russia and Turkey.

    Before joining IBM, Horst worked for different local companies in Germany and lastly for a national insurance company as an HR generalist supporting the sales organizations.

    Horst holds a bachelor degree in Business Administration from the Verwaltungs- und Wirtschaftsakademie in Nuremberg, Germany, which he obtained in evening classes over a period of 3 years. Horst relocated in November 2013 with his wife Elena and his 2 small sons Daniel and Manuel to Beijing.

    Gloria Xu is General Manager for Government Affairs at the Dow Chemical Company in Greater China, and is responsible for the company’s policy advocacy and government engagement in the region.
    Prior to joining Dow, she led the China government affairs functions at DuPont and Standard Chartered Bank for over 10 years with rich experiences in policy development and regulatory issues. Gloria also served as China Public Relations Manager for Alibaba.com Group from 2000 to 2001, and helped build up brand awareness of the internet company at its very early and fast growing stage.
    Prior to her corporate career, from 1993 to 2000, Gloria was a political correspondent with the China Daily, covering legislative and foreign affairs, military, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan news.
    Gloria is currently Chair of AmCham China’s China Government Affairs Committee.
