How US-China Tariffs Affect Foreign Businesses & Strategies to Adapt

On February 1st, Trump signed an executive order announcing the imposition of a 10% tariff on all goods from China and a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico. After Canada and Mexico retaliated with their own tariff hikes, the tariff increases on the two countries were temporarily suspended following negotiations, while the tariff increase on China took effect as scheduled. In response, China also took countermeasures. On February 4th, the Tariff Commission of the State Council issued the "Announcement of the Tariff Commission of the State Council on Imposing Tariffs on Some Imported Goods Originating from the United States" (Tariff Commission Announcement No. 1, 2025) [1], announcing the imposition of a 10% or 15% tariff on some imported goods originating from the United States, such as liquefied natural gas and agricultural machinery. Based on the latest tariff policies of the two countries, export enterprises on both sides will bear higher tariff costs. The spokesman for the President of the United States stated that the two countries will strive to negotiate on the imposed tariffs to prevent a further escalation of the trade war between the two largest economies in the world.
