Children are born with many innate capacities; however, many different factors can influence the learning process. One significant yet often overlooked factor is the cultural context in which children grow up. The Keystone Academy invites you to hear from Dr. Jin Li, professor of education and human development at Brown University, to learn more about how culture can affect learning patterns and influence academic achievement.

Speaking from years of academic experience analyzing children's narratives and conducting in-depth interviews with Chinese-American youth, Dr. Li will outline the basic differences between Chinese and Western learning models, and will discuss in detail how the Western philosophy of learning emphasizes inquiry, curiosity, and creativity, while the Chinese philosophy emphasizes more personal moral virtues such as diligence, concentration, and humility. Dr. Li will also touch on her recent research regarding children's thoughts and feelings on education, as well as their socialization.
This event is sponsored by the Keystone Academy, which blends distinctive traditions in Eastern, Western, and international education, creating an academically rigorous "world" school. The Academy will enroll its inaugural class in Fall 2014, and promises to be a unique and exciting option for families in China. Its three educational keystones are bilingual immersion in Chinese and English, character development and community in a residential setting, and the promotion of Chinese culture and identity in a global context. The Keystone Academy is a day school through Grade 6, with optional boarding in Grades 7 and 8, and required boarding in Grades 9 – 12. To learn more, please visit www.keystoneacademy.cn.
