Power and Gas Storage Technologies and Its Developments in China Market
In this panel co-hosted by AmCham China's Oil, Energy & Power (OEP) Forum and the Clean Tech Forum, experts from the clean-tech and oil industries will be sharing their insights on energy storage technology and its application in China.
Current government targets aim to increase the share of non-fossil fuel energy in the Chinese market to 11.4 percent by 2015, and reduce carbon dioxide emission (per unit GDP) by 17 percent over five years. While both natural gas and renewable energies play a key part in achieving this goal, energy storage has become a bottleneck for developing such alternatives. The continued success of renewable energies, electric vehicles and other "clean tech" industries are dependent on the further development of energy storage technologies.
Despite its importance, discussion related to underground gas storage (UGS) has been limited to industry experts. According to the "Underground Gas Storage in the World 2013'' report, China's natural gas production capacity will increase from 60 billion to 750 billion cubic meters. In addition, UGS could cover 12 percent to 15 percent of future energy storage, with China potentially becoming the biggest gas storage market in the world. As a result, the importance of natural gas and storage solutions continues to grow.
The panel will be hosting two speakers: Mr. Kevin Popper, a consultant with Azure International, will be discussing energy storage and its growth prospects in the Chinese market. The first half of the presentation will introduce current energy storage technologies. The second half will focus on the value of energy storage and its near-term growth prospects. An emphasis will be placed on market drivers and enabling market structures (including time-of-use rate adoption).
Mr. Frederic Badina, technical director at GDF Suez, will be discussing the concept of Underground Gas Storage (UGS) and its recent developments/applications. This will be followed by his insights on the Natural Gas market in China.
