The "good enough" topic first debuted back in 2006, and now it is not just a China topic, but increasingly relevant in other emerging markets, as well as developed markets. Every company needs to have a view on the "good enough" segment as part of their China strategy – "whether", "where to play" and "how to play".
Bain pointed out the most successful strategies share some common elements:
• They start with a clear, differentiated value proposition that avoids cannibalization of premium businesses
• They incorporate a careful analysis of the company's existing platform and whether it can deliver a lower‐cost solution organically with speed and agility
• If not, they compensate resourcefully by considering a full range of options including local sourcing, partnerships, M&A or a blend of all three
• They secure a strong commitment from the global/regional office to provide a significant multi‐year investment
