Summer Film Series: Film Producer John D. Liu on the Transformation of the Loess Plateau - Free Admission
Join AmCham China for its summer film series on environmental change. These films document the relationship between human activity and environmental change through a series of documentaries by John D. Liu, filmmaker and environmental activist.
Given the gravity of the ecological situation, Liu believes that humanity needs to develop a common vision that leads to transformational change and an ecologically sustainable economy and society. He will be speaking about his understanding and how these challenges are being addressed in China, Africa and around the world.
In the first film in the series, Liu will discuss the remarkable transformation of the Loess Plateau (黄土高坡). Covering an area that is the size of France, the Loess Plateau is home to more than 50 million very poor farmers who have suffered centuries of severe soil erosion, leading to massive environmental degradation and poverty. The film documents a remarkable paradigm shift: the rebirth of a self-sustaining ecosystem in the dry and remote Loess Plateau region of China, and identifies why and how a project jointly developed by the local and central government with World Bank support has completely changed the landscape of the region.
On July 16, 17 and 18 AmCham China will show other documentaries each evening which detail other how other environmental challenges are being addressed.
Mr. Liu currently directs the Environmental Education Media Project, is a senior research fellow, IUCN and is a Visiting Fellow with the Critical Zone Hydrology Group, Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences at the Vrije University, Amsterdam.
