The Indiana Secretary of Commerce, Jim Schellinger, will visit Beijing in early December and is holding a breakfast to meet with member companies that are interested indoing business with Indiana and or already have had a presence in Indiana. The Secretary will share about Indiana's international outreach efforts and is interested to hear companies' on-the-ground experiences.


The event is free of charge and will be held at JW Marriot Beijing from 8:30am to 10:00am on December 6.


Space is limited, so registrations will be confirmed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration is initially limited to one senior or mid-level representative from each member company. If space allows, we will open registration up to your colleagues closer to the date of the event.

    Patrick Powers has 30 years of experience in international commerce, government relations and trade policy, achieved in a career that has spanned Asia but focused primarily on China. He has lived and worked in China for more than 20 years, in addition to assignments in Singapore, Vietnam, and Taiwan.

    He is Head of Government Affairs for Rockwell Automation Greater China. Mr. Powers began his career with Bechtel, Inc., and held successive management positions at Island Creek of China Coal Ltd (Occidental Petroleum), SSM Coal BV, SHV Holdings, Tait Asia Ltd. (Vietnam), Mundoro Mining, Cargill, and Applus+.

    Mr. Powers held the position of Vice President for China Operations at the US-China Business Council, the primary organization dealing with Sino-American commercial matters from 1999 to 2006. In that role, he was responsible for business advocacy and advisory services on behalf of 250 American MNC’s operating in the PRC. Mr. Powers has extensive experience in government relations and communications in China and Asia as well as a background in business development and operations in natural resources, large scale retailing, consumer goods warehousing and distribution.

    He has spoken frequently on China-related topics at international conferences and appeared on numerous occasions in media, including CCTV, CNN, CNBC, and Bloomberg, as well as contributing articles to The China Business Review.

    He has a BA from San Diego State University and has pursued advanced language and professional development courses at UC Berkeley, National Taiwan Normal University, and Singapore Institute of Management. Mr. Powers is a fluent Mandarin speaker.

    Mr. Powers is also a Vice-Chairmen on AmCham China's Board of Governors.

    Secretary of Commerce at State of Indiana

    Jim Schellinger is the Secretary of Commerce for the state of Indiana, serving as a member of Governor Eric Holcomb’s cabinet and leading the state’s domestic and international economic development agenda.
    Schellinger previously served as president of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation under Governor Mike Pence, helping lead Indiana business growth and Hoosier job creation efforts as well as key initiatives like the Indiana Regional Cities Initiative and the state’s $1 Billion Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative. Schellinger was appointed to the role in August 2015 after serving two years as a member of the IEDC Board of Directors.
    Prior to serving the state in his current role, Schellinger most recently served as the Chairman/CEO of CSO Architects, a 52-year-old architectural firm, where he practiced architecture since 1984. Under Schellinger’s leadership, CSO led landmark projects such as the Indianapolis International Airport, the JW Marriott, and the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts.
    Schellinger is currently a member of the Dean’s Council for IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and a board member for AgriNovus Indiana, a catalyst for innovation in the food and agriculture industry. Schellinger has served on numerous civic boards including the Indianapolis Capital Improvement Board where he led the new Stadium and Convention Center taskforce and the Super Bowl Host Committee for which he served as the Chairman of the Weather Preparedness and Response Team (WPRT). Schellinger is a member of AIA as well as the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Schellinger has received numerous honors and awards. He was recognized as a Sagamore of the Wabash in 2003, as a Kentucky Colonel in 2009, and received the lifetime achievement award from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in 2011. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture. Schellinger and his wife, Laura, have three sons: Zack, John and Nick.
