Tianjin has a large number of buildings dating from the early 1900s that were built while Tianjin played host to seven European concessions, a Japanese concession and an American contingent. Citizens of these nations and a host of others lived in Tianjin when it was a bustling trading port and diplomatic outpost. AmCham China, Tianjin, in partnership with the German Chamber, invites you experience this history as part of our Tianjin Walking Tour.
Our walking tour will focus on the heart of the former French and British concessions. We will start at the Jiefang Bridge and then travel along Jiefang Road, formerly one of old Tianjin’s main centers of commerce and activity. We will pass by old banks, trading houses, government buildings, clubs and religious structures. We will then head over the Five Boulevards area (Wu Da Dao) where we will stop for lunch at Qing Wang Fu, a grand residence built for the former Chief Eunuch of the Qing Dynasty.
After lunch, we will arrange an optional tour of the Tianjin Museum of Modern History where you will be able to see detailed photos of all of Tianjin’s various former concessions. People who go to this portion will need to pay for the entrance fee (RMB30) to the musuem directly.
Along the way, we’ll learn about why Tianjin ended up being home to such an interesting mix of people and how unique Tianjin was among cities that hosted foreign concessions. The tour will be led by Michael Hart, a former Chairman of AmCham China, Tianjin’s Executive Committee and a property executive who has called Tianjin home for more than ten years.
The morning portion of the tour will take approximately 3.5 hours. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather.
