  • Ching Tien (Founder and President of Educating Girls in Rural China (EGRC))

    Ching Tien

Founder and President of Educating Girls in Rural China (EGRC)

Tien Ching is the Founder and President of Educating Girls in Rural China (EGRC) a charity dedicated to helping young women from rural areas of Western China to obtain an education. Since 2005 EGRC has awarded a total of 512 university and high school sponsorships and the students have achieved 100% graduation rate.

Tien Ching grew up in Beijing and attended a privileged girls-only school where the daughters of Mao, Deng and other high ranking communists’ officials also attended. Because of the Cultural Revolution, along with millions of other young people, her dreams and opportunities were shattered. Instead of going to university she was sent to Gansu province and worked in a factory for eight years. In 1983 she moved to Canada and has made Vancouver her home ever since. She owned and managed an art gallery for over 20 years. Her two children were born in Canada and graduated from Canadian universities. Her dream now is to give these girls in rural China the gift of education which she did not receive. She strongly believes that educated women will have educated children and this is key to making our world a better place.
