Josette Sheeran
President and CEO of the Asia Society
Josette Sheeran is the seventh president and CEO of the Asia Society. She is responsible for leading and advancing the organization's work throughout the U.S. and Asia, and across its disciplines of arts and culture, policy and business, and education. Ms Sheeran is former Vice Chair of the World Economic Forum and in this position helped advance global initiatives such as Grow Africa, which has attracted $4 billion in investment commitments to end hunger and malnutrition in Africa.
Prior to her tenure at the World Economic Forum, Ms Sheeran was executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). There she was responsible for managing the world's largest humanitarian organization, leading a team of 13,000 people in more than 70 countries, and managing an annual budget of more than $3 billion–including $1 billion in Asia.
Ms Sheeran has held senior positions in the U.S. government, including Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative conducting negotiations across Asia, including with China, Australia, Singapore, India, Korea, and Japan.
In 2011, Forbes named Ms Sheeran the world's 30th most powerful woman; Foreign Policy has listed her among its top 100 women on Twitter; and Sheeran's TED Talk on ending world hunger has been viewed more than one million times.
John Yu Oration
The John Yu Oration and Medal Ceremony was established in recognition of Dr. John Yu, AC, to celebrate his lifelong devotion to promoting cultural, educational and scientific relationships between Australia and Asia. Dr. John Yu, the former Chairman of The George Institute for Global Health and Australian of the year, has dedicated his life to the pursuit of fair and equitable healthcare for all, exemplifying the mission of The George
Institute. Each year, the Oration is delivered by an individual who continues to exemplify this mission in their work. This year, the John Yu Oration is being held outside of Australia for the first time.
Dr John Yu AC
FRACP, FRACMA
Dr. John Yu, AC, has held several prominent positions throughout the medical community, including Former Chief Executive of the Children’s Hospital at Camperdown and then at Westmead, Fellow of Royal
Australian College of Physicians and Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators and has honorary doctorates from the University of Western Sydney, the University of Sydney and the University of NSW.
Dr. Yu was the Chancellor of the University of New South Wales, Chair of the Advisory Council of the International Centre of Excellence for Asia Pacific Studies at the Australian National University, Chair of the Centre for Asian Art and Archaeology at the University and Chair of The George Institute for Global Health and a member of the foundation Boards of the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children and the Starlight Foundation. Dr. Yu was a member of the Australia China Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1997-2006 and its Chair from 1999. Dr. Yu has received several high profile awards including the Sachs Medal of the Health Services Association of Australia and the Weary Dunlop Medal of Asia Link, appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1989, a Companion of the Order in 2001 and was named 1996 Australian of the Year.
