The Privatization of Healthcare in China: Lessons from Within and Without
* This event has reached the limit of its capacity, registration was closed.
Healthcare reform in China remains a work in progress. The existing, government-run, largely one-payer system has proven inadequate in the face of a surging economy, rising patient needs and expectations, an aging population, and the lack of a universal health insurance system.
China's nascent private healthcare system offers an alternative, if not a complete, solution to the country's overall healthcare woes. Private healthcare offers patients more choice, greater access and better quality healthcare services – but at what cost, and to whom? Will private healthcare in China serve as a model of reform, or will it result in a two-tiered system – one for the haves, and another for the have-nots?
During this AmCham China Healthcare Forum and reception, healthcare experts from inside and outside China will offer their perspectives on these and related questions, such as:
-Are Chinese citizens becoming true consumers of healthcare? Is this a good or a bad thing? -How will Chinese patients pay for privately provided healthcare? -Is a viable, Chinese medical insurance industry a necessary precursor to a private healthcare sector? -Are there lessons to be learned from outside China with respect to the privatization of healthcare?
