At the 2014 S&ED, US and Chinese negotiators affirmed their commitment to intensifying Bilateral Investment Treaty Negotiations, setting a goal to "reach agreement on core issues and major articles of the treaty text by the end of 2014" and "initiate the 'negative list' negotiation in early 2015 based on each other's 'negative list' offers." However, what are the key challenges to successfully negotiating a US-China BIT and what should AmCham China as an organization be doing to help encourage this process?
Join us on September 9th as James Green, Minister‐Counselor for Trade Affairs at the US Embassy in Beijing, provides the background of the ongoing US-China BIT negotiations and an update on their current status. Tim Stratford, managing partner at Covington & Burling LLP in Beijing, and former Assistant US Trade Representative, will then provide an overview on current measures and practices restraining foreign investment in China, based on a recently released report drafted for the European Commission Directorate-General for Trade.

Following the presentations and Q&A, we will discuss the formation of a Bilateral Investment Treaty Task Force and ways that AmCham China can best engage the US and Chinese governments during the BIT negotiation process.
