***This event has been cancelled. If you have previously signed-up for this event, an AmCham China staff member will contact you with more information***
AmCham China's Women's Professional Committee invites Monica Marcel to discuss bias from both the general and professional perspective, and how organizations are changing their internal and external operations in order to improve work atmosphere and efficiency.
"Sometimes the behavioral research leads us to completely change how we think about an issue. For example, many of our anti-discrimination policies focus on finding the bad apples who are explicitly prejudiced. In fact, the serious discrimination is implicit, subtle and nearly universal." David Brooks, 2013, New York Times
Even when good people are determined to be fair and objective, the science is clear: we may believe our actions are in line with our conscious intention, but our unconscious is driving our behavior. Decades of neurology and social and cognitive psychology on implicit bias have introduced a breakthrough among organizations working to both address inequities and ensure greater innovation. On every continent and in every sector, from health care to education to technology to public service, major attention is now being paid to how implicit, hidden biases operate just below human consciousness to drive the way we see and treat others. The speaker will bring examples from her own work on the topic from China, the US and dozens of other countries. Monica will highlight both the latest research and how organizations from Fortune 500® corporations to school to NGOs are applying the science to change their practices both in their internal operations and in how they deliver services to external customers.
