The ten provinces along China's coast account for 36 percent of the country's population and over half of the nation's GDP. With a much higher urbanization rate and average disposable income, this area has become an energy demand center in China. Today it accounts for close to 50 percent of Chinese power consumption.
Coal has been fueling much of the growth in coastal China, but a recent focus on urban air pollution has heightened the demand for cleaner fuel in the future. As the demand for coal slows down and electricity consumption continues to grow at a relatively rapid pace, how will coastal China meet its future demand? Will there be sufficient natural gas to fill the gap? How will the higher costs of gas impact demand?
