Standards play a powerful role in international trade by facilitating the growth of market share and ensuring a minimal level of safety and inter-interoperability between products. Standards can also act as barriers to trade, particularly when countries enforce domestic standards that differ from globally accepted norms. This increases the costs of manufacturing and exporting.
