Speaker:
Joan Oliver
Former CEO of FC Barcelona

Dr. Bryan Bachner
Co-Chair of AmCham Sports Committee

Mathew Alderson
Partner at Harris Bricken
Co-Chair of AmCham Media & Entertainment Forum

The sports industry in China is growing fast. Elite soccer teams in Europe have been purchased by local Chinese investors and the first investment in a US basketball team by a Chinese citizen has just been closed. Many of the prestigious international sports media firms are now owned by Chinese businesses.

In 2003, Football Club Barcelona (FCB) was at a low ebb with success on the pitch and in the marketplace difficult to achieve. Joan Oliver became the head of global media rights and international business strategy. Their first task was to revitalize La Masia, the venerable soccer academy of FCB, which they did with style and unimaginable success. The approach to media was also re-thought. In 2008, Joan Oliver was made FCB’s Chief Executive Officer. By the end of his term in 2010, FCB was ranked #1 in the world with a market valuation of USD1B. Mr. Oliver’s strategy of bringing the FCB style of soccer to China through an investment thesis is known as the “Barcelona to Beijing Bridge”.

The forum will be held at AMCHAM Office Conference Center, on Tuesday, 5 December, and begin promptly at 4:30 pm and end at 6:00 pm with a wine and cheese event following the talk. A special invitation only C-Suite dinner with Mr Oliver will follow the forum at a local nearby restaurant. The dinner will be charged separately.

    Joan Oliver

    Former CEO of FC Barcelona

While studying History and Economics in Universitat de Barcelona, Oliver worked free-lance in the publishing industry. In 1978 he joined Banco Urquijo as a financial analyst. In 1980 he created and led a subsidiary of the bank, Gesdata, which developed the very first European database of stock market information. In 1983 he founded his own company, Enfony S.A., to supply financial information through the internet. Three years later, the company became the Spanish partner of Financial Times Electronic Publishing. It was too early for this kind of publishing and this venture failed and was sold in 1992.

In November 1992 he started “Bon Dia Catalunya” a morning TV show at TV3, the main Catalan television station. From 1994 he was the anchorman and director of the program that was the audience leader for 8 consecutive years. Between 2002 and 2004 he was TV3’s
C.E.O. During his administration, the station was the most viewed in its territory. During that time he was also General Manager of Audiovisual Sports (the leading Spanish company in sports television media rights) and Board Director of Media Park. He also set up a cooperation agreement with CCTV in 2003, his first experience in China.

From 1995 to 2008 he published a daily column in the newspaper “Avui” and was a regular contributor to other publications and radio and TV shows. In 2004 he started to work with Futbol Club Barcelona. He was in charge of selling the club’s TV rights and designing the international strategy of the club. Between 2006 and 2008 he was based in New York City. In 2008, he was named Futbol Club Barcelona’s CEO. He stepped down on 30 June 2010 after the new administration took over. Throughout the two seasons during which he managed the club, Futbol Club Barcelona (“Barca”) became the first team to ever win 6 cups in a row. The Spanish national team that won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Euro Cup was mainly composed of Barça players and adopted the Barça style. In 2011-2012 he founded Core Store SL in Barcelona, whose main goal is to develop football in USA and China.
