The sports industry in China is growing fast. Elite soccer teams in Europe have been purchased by local Chinese investors and the first investment in a US basketball team by a Chinese citizen has just been closed. Many of the prestigious international sports media firms are now owned by Chinese businesses.
In 2003, Football Club Barcelona (FCB) was at a low ebb with success on the pitch and in the marketplace difficult to achieve. Joan Oliver became the head of global media rights and international business strategy. Their first task was to revitalize La Masia, the venerable soccer academy of FCB, which they did with style and unimaginable success. The approach to media was also re-thought. In 2008, Joan Oliver was made FCB’s Chief Executive Officer. By the end of his term in 2010, FCB was ranked #1 in the world with a market valuation of USD1B. Mr. Oliver’s strategy of bringing the FCB style of soccer to China through an investment thesis is known as the “Barcelona to Beijing Bridge”.
The forum will be held at AMCHAM Office Conference Center, on Tuesday, 5 December, and begin promptly at 4:30 pm and end at 6:00 pm with a wine and cheese event following the talk. A special invitation only C-Suite dinner with Mr Oliver will follow the forum at a local nearby restaurant. The dinner will be charged separately.
