The American Chamber of Commerce in the People’s Republic of China (AmCham China) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization whose membership comprises 4,000 individuals from 900 companies operating across China. The Chamber’s nationwide mission is to help American companies succeed in China through advocacy, information, networking, and business support services. In addition to our headquarters in Beijing, AmCham China serves Tianjin, Central China, and Northeast China through our Chapters in Tianjin, Dalian, Shenyang, and Wuhan. Across the five offices, AmCham China has more than 30 working groups, and holds more than 150 events each year.

China trade policy under the Biden administration has largely remained undisclosed, as a "top-to-bottom review" carried out by US Trade Representative Katherine Tai remains ongoing. AmCham China is pleased to meet with the Center for American Progress (CAP) on Wednesday, August 25, from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM, as part of the ongoing 2021 Virtual DC Outreach efforts. There were at least 56 CAP alumni reportedly now working in the Biden administration, including its former CEO and President Neera Tanden. In the meeting, AmCham China Chairman Greg Gilligan, together with the DC Outreach delegates, will exchange views with CAP Executive Vice President for Policy, Mara Rudman, and Senior Fellow on China, Nina Palmer on US-China trade relations, and to better understand the US worker-centered trade policy.

The Chamber would like to extend the invite to the Policy+ group for listening in. If time allows, attendees can also raise questions during the Q&A. The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, August 24 at 3:00 PM.

Mara Rudman is the executive vice president for policy at American Progress, where she works with policy teams to create smart strategies and find the path to turn ideas into action and action into results. She served in both the Obama and Clinton administrations.

Rudman was most recently senior vice president for policy/projects at Business Executives for National Security, and led Quorum Strategies, a geopolitical strategic advisory firm. Her government positions have included serving as deputy assistant to the president for national security affairs in the Obama and Clinton administrations, deputy envoy and chief of staff for the Office of the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace at the U.S. Department of State, and assistant administrator for the Middle East at the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Rudman is an American Progress veteran. From 2004 to 2009, she worked as the senior vice president for Strategic Planning and then was a senior fellow and founder of Middle East Progress. She also is a faculty fellow at Georgetown University. Earlier in her career, she was chief counsel to the House Foreign Affairs Committee; she started her career working for her hometown member of Congress.

Rudman has been a guest on numerous TV and radio shows and has written for and been quoted in various print publications. She received her bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a law degree from Harvard Law School.

Nina Palmer is a senior fellow for China at American Progress. She focuses on U.S. foreign policy toward China and China’s energy, climate, technology, maritime, and governance policies.

Palmer has worked on China issues for more than a decade. Before joining American Progress, she worked as a senior director in the Albright Stonebridge Group’s China practice. She also spent a decade in government, where she served as the U.S. Energy attaché to China in Beijing and conducted China analysis at the U.S. departments of Energy and the Navy.

Palmer is concurrently an Argonne associate at the Argonne National Lab, where she conducts analysis on Asian science, technology, and nuclear energy policies. She is also a Pacific Forum young leader.

Palmer holds an M.A. in Asian studies from Georgetown, a graduate certificate from the Hopkins Nanjing Center, and a B.A. in East Asian studies from Smith College. She is professionally proficient in Mandarin.
